Our everyday lives are infused with romance. Even TV/internet shows and commercials - which are nothing but a symbolic representation of our current values as a society- tend to show happiness as being part of a relationship, or a relationship being the top goal in life - worth buying cologne or leg shavers for. So we can say there is a general tendency as a society to rely on romance in hopes of fulfilling ourselves.
Isn't it funny though how the most memorable love stories ever told are not those where the protagonists live happily ever after, but where they are consumed by their passion and doomed by outer circumstances, or 'fate'. Such are the classic love stories or Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, or the more contemporary 'Casablanca' or ‘Love Story’. So I guess we tend to have a sweet tooth for bad romance. Speaking of sweet tooth and bad romance, I got the idea for writing this article while having a random thought about Heath Ledger and his movie 'Candy". I'll tell you more about it in a bit.
'Candy' - movie trailer
As I was saying, there are several perspectives we can look from and many factors leading to addictive behavior in general, which influences all areas of life including relationships, but right now I'll just be talking about the North Node, Rahu.
Rahu is the fog enveloping things, making them appear better than they are. It’s also a force that pulls you in a direction needed for your self development, whether you like it or not. If you study planetary combinations and their effects, you will notice Rahu involved in several yogas that can produce mental illness, alcoholism or deceitful behavior, as well as relating to poisons (natural or man-made chemicals). So let’s say you have Rahu in the 8th house, of secrets, but also of the value we put on relationships, since it is 2nd from the 7th. Rahu there can bring addictive tendencies in relation to fulfilling emotional needs. That can translate into relying so much on sex as an emotional comfort that it becomes an addiction. Then, having Venus with Rahu is a bit tough (of fun, however you see it) for all genders, because these individuals tend to attract a lot of relationships until they learn to conceptualize and verbalize to themselves and to other people what exactly is that they want from a committed partnership. Also, for women attracted to men or for those that identify as LGBT+ attracted to a more of a ‘Yang’ individual, Jupiter with Rahu can also bring a string of unfulfilling relationships. Mars is the karaka (manifester) of hard-core sex, among other things. And since Rahu is an amplifier for whatever it joins, you can imagine that a person with that combination in their chart will be more prone to a certain type of behavior - of course, in conjunction with other factors. It would be silly to judge things in isolation, like trying to guess what a whole outfit would look like by looking at a button. Then, the Moon being with Rahu can lead one down addiction lane, among other things. The Moon represents our mind, and Rahu is something not yet grasped, not yet developed, but very magnetic - so the person with that conjunction will seem very attractive, especially females, but in reality they will be quite immature in relationships, at best. In the natural zodiac, the 4th cusp relates to Cancer, the sign that is the Moon’s domicile. The 4th cusp also relates to happiness, and is a Moksha (liberation) bhava. When Rahu is there in the birth chart, we get a Kapata (deceit) yoga, which makes the person hide things from themselves first, and then from the others. And what goes hand in hand with hiding our feelings? Compensation by some form of addiction. So the protagonists of the Australian movie 'Candy' are the text-book example of a Rahu influence. They are both addicted to heroin (Jaimini teaches Rahu combinations doing just that). Then, they steal in order to fuel their addiction (Jaimini again includes Rahu in thievery combinations). After many intense tragedies, the two lovers end their relationship, one is on the path to recovery- probably hit his Rahu maturation, while the girl seems to choose to stay on addiction lane - the lower, more accessible side of Rahu. So there you go.
